Project YES

Yes, I want to read, Yes, Teach me to read. Yes, I can Read.

Change 1 Child has partnered with a public school in a disadvantaged community in New York City to bring readers and reading materials into the classrooms. The children are from low income families and will say Yes, if we ask the question: Do you want to Read? Change 1 Child will read to the children each month and will distribute reading books to each child in order for the children to start an at-home library. The children will keep a log of all books that they received and read. Please ask the question to a child, listen to the answer and Change 1 Child.

Project Hope

Change 1 Child has partnered with several failing schools in disadvantaged communities around New York City. Volunteers will visit each school monthly to read to all children in grades PreK-3rd grade. We will also distribute reading books to all children in the focused grades in order for the students to create an at-home library. Our goal is to encourage and motivate these children to create a love for reading.

Our USA project is needed because 4 in 10 preschoolers, 5 in 10 toddlers and 6 in 10 babies are not read to regularly.

40% of American children have difficulty reading or learning to read

43% of American children with low literacy skills live in poverty.

88% of American children who have difficulty reading at the end of the first grade display similar difficulties at the end of fourth grade.

Project I AM: Orphans in Ghana, West Africa

I AM motherless, I AM fatherless but I am NOT hopeless.

Change 1 Child has partnered with two orphanages in Ghana, West Africa. Change 1 Child's coordinator in Ghana will visit each orphanage twice a month to read to the children, provide books, clothing and school supplies to each child.

The Orphanages that we have partnered with are located in Osu and Teshie. Osu Children's Orphanage house a total of 196 abandoned and needy children from birth to eighteen years. The Teshie Orphanage which is also located in Accra, Ghana, has a total of 40 children from ages 6 months to 18 years old. Project Broken but NOT forgotten: AIDS in Uganda, East Africa

Change 1 Child has partnered with a nonprofit organization (Organisation for Good Life of the Marginalized, OGLM). This organization houses children orphaned by AIDS. OGLM works for/with the Orphan & Vulnerable Children, Sex Workers, Grandmothers, Youths and Women. There are currently 72 children that are orphaned by AIDS at this orphanage. We will work with our program coordinator in Uganda to provide books, school supplies, clothing and medical care for these children.

Our goal is to show the children that they are loved and not forgotten.

Why this is needed -

By the end of the 2004 there were:

39.4 million people living with HIV or AIDS worldwide.

2.2 million of these people are children under age of fifteen.

12.1 million orphaned children living with AIDS reside in Sub-Saharan Africa.
